Geographical relationship to Crete
Minoan Crete is found towards the bottom of the Aegean and is a stark contrast in size to the many small islands that also inhabit the sea. Large enough to hold a significant population, it had great tactical advantage for both military, due to its isolation and sea power, and trade, as any trade entering into the Aegean would inevitably pass through its area.
Unlike Crete, Thera was of little strategic importance although it was of a life sustaining size and quite close to Crete. This proximity would have had a benefit for a colony as it would have made communication and support far easier, quicker and safer. Additionally by having an island close by and yet at the border of the other islands would aid in naval expeditions, allowing them somewhere they might use for rest and repair. |
